A Bit About Me..

To use this backup method you will need to have Total Commander installed.

bulletStart Total Commander and select the Source Directory in the left-hand pane and the Target Directory in the right-hand pane.

bulletIn my case I have selected c:\Brother\BrDriver\MfcXP as my Source Folder in the left-hand pane.

bulletThen I am going to select my portable Lacie Hard drive as the Target Drive.... and ... then select the Backups/MFC folder on the Lacie where my files from the C Drive will be backed up to.
bulletI then select Commands from the Total Commander Menu and down to Synchronize Dirs...

bulletThe Synchronize Directories window will open...

bulletNotice the Source and Target directories are listed at the top. Make sure these are correct. Then go to the Show section and unclick all but the green arrow. This will only show the files on the Source that need updating.

bulletThen click Compare and ...

bulletHere you can see all of the files have been checked as needing to be backed up. That is, they don't exist in the Target directory or they are different (need backing up).

Go ahead and click on Synchronize....

bulletThe Synchronize dialogue window will confirm what you want to do... If it looks right... click Ok.

bulletWhen the file transfer has finished the Synchronize Directories window will show no files.
bulletAfter you have created your first backup, the beauty of using this method is that in future you only need to backup those files that have changed (this is called an incremental backup). If a file exists on the Target that also exists in the Source it will ask if you want to overwrite the Target file.... if you are doing an incremental backup you can safely answer 'OverWrite All Older'.

bulletThe result is ... a perfect image of your original files ... both directories are the same.

Once you have finished, click on Close.

By using the above backup method you can backup your important files quickly and safely.
